Release notes

Genesis - We Can't Dance Instore play copy. Strictly promotional release issued prior to the album release. The catalogue number of this CD is DJG CD3. The CD was released by Virgin and distributed across the UK via Virgin Records LTD. distribution channel.

PROMOTIONAL CD - NOT FOR SALE is printed above the catalogue number. The disc has the same label as the original album release. Virgin logo is present on the bottom of the label. Note there is no Compact Disc logo on disc. MANUFACTURED IN THE UK is printed at 7 o'clock.

Front sleeve has INSTORE PLAY COPY printed in the upper left corner. Below is the release date of the album and world airplay date. We Can't Dance had worldwide radio premiere on 7th November, 1991. So it's most likely the CD was also intended to radio premiere.

The CD was not on sale. Copies were given to the radio stations and music stores before the official album release. The CD came in a cardboard sleeve, which has a very limited print. Rear sleeve has Virgin logo on top, the catalogue number and NOT FOR SALE note. Below is the tracklist and that's it.

The CD was manufactured in the UK by Nimbus factory. The matrix numbers of the disc are: "GENCD 3 :   5:1". Notice the additional, machinery stamped, matrix codes. These can be found on many re-issues from 1991 and 1992 done by Nimbus.

Apparently, the CD was supplied to the shops with the following letter:

"Dear Dealer: Please find enclosed a promotional copy of the new Genesis CD - 'We Can`t Dance' The Album, which I am sure you are aware is released on Monday 11th November 1991. Your support in playing it over the weekend prior to release would be greatly appreciated. I hope you enjoy the album. Regards Mark Hutton Sales Manager."

My copy does not have the letter though. I believe the original letter was removed at some point. Over the years I have seen a few copies for sale and all were without the letter. The original letter would be a very nice addition to this find.

I would say this copy is not an easy to locate, even in the UK, but there are still some copies around.

Disc variation

No variation that I know of.
