Release notes

This UK CD issue was released by Virgin/Charisma label in 1987. The disc of this release was manufactured in the UK by Disctec, the third largest CD manufacturer in the UK at that time. The CD was released without a barcode on the rear inlay. The catalogue number of the release is CDSCD 4001. The artwork is manufactured in the UK.

The disc of this release is silver (or more likely yellowish) with a black text on it. The statement "MANUFACTURED IN THE UK" is printed on the right side of the disc (at 3 o'clock). The disc does have the outer mirror band. The disc does not have, however, the record label logo on it.

The UK CD releases of "A Trick of the Tail" differs from others. Genesis title is printed in black. Booklet has 16 pages with lyrics. The first and the last page of the booklet are yellow in colour, whereas the middle pages are white. The booklet is quite thick and prone to damage while remove it from jewel case.  The last page of the booklet bears Virgin and Charisma records logo one to each other. The catalogue number is printed underneath the logo.

As far as I am aware, this copy was released for the UK market but some discs were also distributed in Germany (in a very short period of time). The disc must have been release in a small numbers. Moreover, it appears that the whole print was quickly withdrawn due to the manufacturing mistake. Some copies of an exactly the same CD plays album "Duke". At some point, the mislabelled discs have been sent to the shops. I suspect that after reporting the mistake the record label decided to abandon another runs and all the existing CDs were withdrawn. I don't have the mislabelled disc, but I have seen it on the auction where seller mention that disc plays different album. It was years ago and, at that time, I thought it's not something what I am interested in. Well, I was wrong.

This CD, in my opinion, is hard to find and present a challenge. Because of the error made during the manufacturing process not many discs where sold out. Another CD factory took over the production and Disctec copies were replaced by Nimbus discs.

It should also be noted that some copies of this release were distributed in Germany by ARIS, within a short period of time.

Disc variation

No variation that I know of, but this copy was briefly distributed in Germany. For more information see this entry.
