Release notes

This entry presents Vertigo CD that was released, in 1984, on the Japanese market. The disc of this release is manufactured by Polygram plant in Hanover, West Germany. This is the first ABACAB CD released in Japan. The exact date of the release remain unknown but this CD was released, on the Japanese market, sometime in late 1984. The catalogue number of this release is 32PD-35.

The disc have blue Vertigo swirl graphics and a black text. Half part of the CD is printed in grey colour while the rest is silver and blue. There is no outer mirror band present on disc. MADE IN W. GERMANY BY POLYGRAM is printed along the bottom disc edge.

The CD has been released with a blue OBI strip that wraps all the way down to the spine. A Japanese fold-out, double sided insert with notes and lyrics, is supplied with the release. Note there is no barcode printed on the OBI.

Front Insert has only two pages. There are no lyrics inside, just a picture of Mike Rutherford, Phil Collins and Tony Banks sitting by the wall. The colour scheme of the front page of the insert is light gray, yellow, navy blue and maroon. The insert has printed Manufactured by Polygram in Hanover, West Germany in the bottom right corner. Vertigo logo appear on top. Rear insert has barcode and Printed in West Germany on the bottom. The CD has been released in a smooth-sided jewel case.

The disc have GEMA indication and DIGITALLY MASTERED printed on the label. The matrix numbers are "800044-2 01 DM". Note the matrix numbers don't have dashes (spaces) between first six digits. Also "DM" is not the part of the matrix string. These hand etched letters are not present on discs manufactured by 1983. Polygram began adding additional letters sometime in early 1984. Although Vertigo "blue swirl" CDs, with a black text on label, are from late 1983, the disc from this entry was been manufactured in 1984, shortly before Vertigo changed their label (for red colour). This is undoubtedly the very first CD release issued on the Japanese market. Later, in 1985, another release (with the same catalogue number) appears on the Japanese market, but this will be presented in other entries.

The CD was sold for ¥3.200 and distributed by Nippon Phonogram. Please note that the blue OBI was printed in Japan although there is no mention about it. Discs were sourced from West Germany, because Nippon Phonogram did not have rights to distribute Vertigo CDs therefore they sourced them from Europe.

I have never seen any variation of this release, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an early red label Vertigo CD that came with blue OBI.

This CD is extremely hard to find, even in Japan. This release was not on the market for long, and because of its rarity, whoever want to buy it will have to pay a premium.

Disc variation

No variation that I know off.
